“Why should I listen to you?” Redefining Teaching in the Age of Democratized Information

Presenter: Micah Fierstein

Teacher Presenters

Today’s students are saturated with information, instantaneously available with the stroke of a key. We will challenge the definition of teaching as "ideas or principles taught by an authority with expertise." Blind allegiance to an authority is declining rapidly and content expertise is diminishing as information grows exponentially. Knowledge has been democratized. The Internet has both reduced the cost of retrieving information, while at the same time rapidly expanding its accessibility. A ticket to the world is now available to anyone with a Chromebook and free Wi-Fi. This raises the question; "Why should students listen to the teacher (me)?"

This workshop allows teachers to explore innovative strategies to successfully engage students in meaningful and effective learning without relying on their teacher’s personal authority and expertise. It also invites participants to rethink what teaching is, and how to align their teaching to the present realities students bring into the classroom.
