We Can’t Build Empathy Sitting Down

We know there is value in pushing students outside a protective academic bubble to participate in real world learning and service, but teachers struggle to find time, resources, and assessable outcomes. Teachers at the International School of Helsinki designed an interdisciplinary unit entitled “Why Do We Turn Away?” They challenged MYP students to develop their own answer to this question. Lessons strategically blended psychology, a study of the global migration crisis, literature, and performance skills with an authentic connection to the local refugee community.

As a culmination, students developed a powerful performance of understanding for their families and the migrants with whom they connected throughout the unit. This workshop will showcase “Why Do They Turn Away?” as a model for service that pushes students to challenge their assumptions and expand their empathy. We will discuss practical approaches to developing learning experiences that meet and ultimately exceeds the MYP criterion.
