Sustained Inquiry for Deep Learning

Presenter: Garfield Gini-Newman

Conference Workshop

Learning through inquiry is a popular trend in education. Yet, too often the inquiries that students engage with are neither critical nor sustained over time. In this workshop, Garfield will share a approach referred to as "Cascading Challenges" that encourages teachers to develop rich, over-arching inquiries and challenges that are scaffolded through a carefully sequences set of lines of inquiry and mini-challenges. As well, the use of "Thoughtbooks" where students capture their initial thinking and then "muck about" with revisions and additions as their learning unfolds will be introduced to teachers. Finally, an alternative assessment tool referred to as a "Guide to Success" that promotes iterative learning and a focus on thinking will be shared.
