Student-Driven Makerspace Design

If you could help enhance learning at your school, how would you do it? This question was posed to students in our Schooltopia elective course back in 2017. Dozens of ideas were jotted down, followed by passionate debate, and the concept of a Makerspace emerged. But something was missing - the efficacy to bring their plan to life. At the Anglo-American School of Moscow, we champion student agency, voice, and choice. Encouraging students to take the wheel and direct their own learning is our aim.

Our presentation outlines what happens when students are given a real budget, a BYOD tech policy, and a physical space to design from the ground up. We’ll share our pitfalls and our triumphs and provide a blueprint of where to begin. From school-wide surveys to brainstorming breakout sessions, this is the story of how our students’ brainpower and know-how created a space which is quickly becoming a center of exploration and creation in our middle school.
