Reaching Out Club: Working with Refugees in Warsaw

Presenter: Alan James Teodor Ajder

Teacher Presenters

The workshop will provide an overview of how the American School of Warsaw works with the local refugee population in an on-going, sustainable model. Included will be information on the weekly after school bilingual immersion program, the monthly activities which take place at the refugee center, ASW, and in the broader community, and a book acquisition and distribution program.

Some time will be given to what has worked, not worked, obstacles to and successes with interacting with local authorities responsible for asylum seekers, funding issues, as well as ways the program at ASW has tried to identify and address specific needs of refugee children living in Poland. The workshop will end with a brainstorming session on how an individual school's local conditions might provide opportunities or present obstacles to working with refugees.
