Making Magic in the Lobby: Setting the Historical Context Before They Even Reach Their Seats

Presenter: Valerie Navarro Tamara Fernandez

Teacher Presenters

Participants will see samples of "living lobby art" and learn ways to convey the historical context of a work of art through student role play and banter with the waiting audience members.

This use of "street theatre" within the walls of the lobby acts to engage and unify the audience before they even enter the theatre. Whether your school is putting on a play or musical, concert, art exhibit or other event, the use of "drop-in" characters from the past can create a magic portal into the moment in time when the work was created.

Those who attend the workshop will have the chance to actually participate in a "living lobby art" scene demonstrating how to tap into audience empathy and interest using six different universal emotions.
