The purpose of this session is to explore a tool that can be applied to identify current and aspired states of global competencies among various stakeholder groups in your school.

Vilnius International School used the conceptual continuum created by Eqqbal Hassim, as part of the CIS model for global citizenship and intercultural learning to develop a shared understanding of where we are as educators and to better articulate where we perceive our students to be with regard to the acquisition of the skills and dispositions that constitute a culturally proficient human being. The indicators developed by Dr. Hassim provided specific language that helped us describe observed behaviors by class/grade level and enabled us to identify our current and desired states. This improved awareness and clarity set us up to design more intentional learning engagements and next steps at the micro level.

VIS will continue working with Dr. Hassim throughout the winter (who has given me verbal permission to share our journey using the continuum) to further evolve an authentic approach to developing global competencies and embed the DIEB initiatives in a manner that is responsive to our community.

Additional Background/ Context

Vilnius International School is piloting the new CIS Pathway 2 accreditation protocol. The new protocol engages schools in a deep dive process. That means we are no longer asked to upload scads of evidence demonstrating that we know what good looks like with respect to the multitude of standards. The deep dive process allows us to focus intentionally on areas we know we need to improve. The process has been liberating for our school because the deep dive allows the school to be open and honest with our peers about how we plan to address them.
