The Collaboration Cycle: Beyond “Push-In” & “Pull-Out”

• Speaker: Christina Nelson (WIDA) •

Over time, EAL teachers have shifted from the isolation of their own rooms with their own students, to selectively pulling out students, and then to a combination of push-in and pull-out approaches.
Viewing teaching as a collaborative practice that involves shared decisions and responsibilities helps us move beyond the idea of “my students” and “your students” and towards collaborative teaching as an inclusive professional practice.
This session will explore how all teachers can share responsibility for all students, and how we can move beyond the limited choices of “push-in” vs “pull-out”.
We will engage with four phases of a collaboration cycle: co-planning, co-teaching, co-assessing and co-reflecting and explore how WIDA tools are used to support these phases.
